Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a curable transmitted infection (STI).The disease spreads through semen or fluids during unprotected contact, with an infected partner. Casual contact, such as kissing, doesn't spread the disease. It is the second most commonly reported bacterial STI in the United States following chlamydia. An infected pregnant woman also can pass gonorrhea to her baby during delivery. It a highly contagious transmitted disease (STD), is one of the most commonly reported diseases in the United States, with more than 350,000 cases each year.

Gonococcal infections following perinatal transmission are a major source of morbidity worldwide. In addition to gonorrhea playing a major role in PID, some health researchers think it adds to the risk of getting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, also referred to as gonococcus, causes gonorrhea. The bacteria can grow in several places in the body, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), urethra (urine canal), mouth, throat, eyes and anus. The rate of STDs in this country is 50 to 100 times higher than that of any other industrialized nation. A person with gonorrhea must be considered infectious (able to transmit the bacteria) from the time of exposure until treatment is successful. However, many people do not know they have gonorrhea, because although they are infected, they do not have any symptoms.

Causes of Gonorrhea

The comman causes of Gonorrhea include the following :

• Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
• Injury.
• Infection.
• Crystalline diseases.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea

Some sign and symptoms related to Gonorrhea are as follows :

• Weight loss, loose stools, night sweats.
• Sometimes men with gonorrhea get painful or swollen testicles.
• Pain or burning when passing urine.
• Inflammation or infection of a duct in the testicles.
• Infection or inflammation of the prostate Irritation of the mucous membranes in the eyes (if not treated, can cause blindness).

Treatment of Gonorrhea

Here is list of the methods for treating Gonorrhea :

• Several antibiotics such as ceftriaxone (Rocephin) can successfully cure gonorrhea in adolescents and adults.
• Over-the-counter pain relievers may reduce signs or symptoms, these medications won't cure gonorrhea.
• Ofloxacin.
• Tetracycline.
• Chlamydial infection is found frequently in patients with gonorrhea; thus, empiric antibiotic therapy should be sufficient to treat both infections.
• If you are pregnant or younger than 18, the doctor will usually prescribe the shot instead of a pill.
• Pain relief may be needed for patients with epididymitis, PID, and DGI.
