Visual Acuity Test

Visual Acuity Test is a series of tests to determine the sharpness of vision, and the extent and nature of defects in visual focus. Patients are asked to read from a chart (called the snellen chart) on which the letters (or pictures) diminish in size and boldness of print from top to bottom. A person with normal vision should be able to read letters 9 mm high from a distance of 6 m (In the days of imperial measures, if you could read letters 3/8 of an inch high from a distance of 20 feet, your vision would be recorded). If any defects of focus are found, you are asked to read the chart again through various com-binations of lenses. The combination that corrects focus to normal is then incorporated in glasses or contact lenses.
